Fathainn

Sgrìobh mi an t-amhran seo airson consairt a bh' ann an Inbhir Nis a bha a' cuimhneachadh muinntir Hoirt is an dìleab.
There is much written about the evacuation and the people of the remote island of St Kilda off the Outer Hebrides.  The chattering city folk speak in the verses and the islander's voice is heard in the chorus.

Tha fathainn a' dol mun cuairt, mun cuairt
G' eil daoine anns a' bhaile à Hiort, à Hiort
Truaghain bhochda, mòran strì
Air falbh bhon eilean gu sìorraidh

O, mo chridhe trom
Is e gun sòlas
O, m' anam fann
A' sireadh saoghal ùir

Bho bhaile gu baile chun a' bhaile mhòir
Saoghal bun-os-cionn, ceart gu leòr
Iad cho neònach, iad cho fann
Bheil iadsan a' cluinntinn ar fathainn?

A' siubhal cho fada bho àit' gu àit'
Aghaidhean bàna, sùilean glaiste
Cà'il sibh a' dol, bheil sibh caillte?
Dè tha romhaibh, mhuinntir na mara?
There are rumours going around
That St Kildan's are in town
Poor souls, so much strife
Forever exiled from their isle

Oh my heavy heart
And it without solace
Oh my weakened soul
Seeking a new life

From town to town to the big city
A topsy turvy life, sure enough
They're so strange, they're so weak
Are they hearing our rumours?

Travelling so far, from place to place
Expressionless faces, steely eyes
Where are you going, are you lost?
What's ahead of you, people of the sea?

Trì Rionnagan Beaga

Thoisich mi a' sgrìobhadh seo nuair a bha mi a' dràibheadh dhachaigh aon oidhche tron a' Ghleann Mhòr.  Bha mi a' smaoineachadh air mo theaghlach is mo chlann is cho fortanach 's a bha mi gun robh iad agam.
I travel all over the Highlands and Scotland through my work.  I wrote this song when travelling home late one night while thinking of my home and family.

A' siubhal dhachaigh a-nochd
Tha trì reultan san speur
Thar na mìltean
A' losgadh gu treun
A' toirt stiùireadh is dòchas
Sòlas is sìth'
Trì rionnagan beaga
Cho prìseil dhomh fhìn

Mur nach robh iad gu h-àrd
Bhithinn mar bhàta gun stiùir
Gun soilleireachd gach oidhche
Air chall sa mhuir
Dh'fheumainn neart a lorg
Mo bheatha gun chiall
Gun trì rionnagan beaga
Cho prìseil dhomh fhìn

Le fortan mar seo
Chan eil sìon a tha dhìth
Nan robh an aon rud a'd fhèin
Thuigeadh tu mo bhrìgh
'S iad an solas nam shùil
Is an t-sùmhlachd nam chridh'
Na trì rionnagan beaga
Cho prìseil dhomh fhìn

'S an t-aon beag a tha crìonadh
Cha bhi thu fada bhuainn a ghràidh
Cum sùil a-mach oirnn uile
'S bidh mo shùil-sa ort le bàigh
Travelling home tonight
There are three stars in the sky
They burn brighter
Than thousands of others
They give direction and hope
Comfort and peace
Three small stars
So precious to me

If they weren't on high
I'd be a boat adrift
Without their light every night
I'd be lost at sea
I'd have to seek strength
My life with no sense
Without three small stars
So precious to me

With fortune like this
There is need for nought
If you had the same
You'd understand my words
They are the light of my eye
The peace in my heart
The three small stars
So precious to me

And the one which is fading
You won't be far from us my love
Keep an eye on us all
And I will look adoringly upon you
