A poem written in North Uist at a poetry workshop.
To Uibhist We leave the city Noise, bluster, bolshy rhythm The lochside road beckons like the next chapter of a good book Is Nessie real you say Of course she is says you I think of Colmcille and Brude and what they would think Where are we Inbhir Moireasdan of the union flag It gets me every time The tranquil glen of holiday homes Leading west Follow the yellow line across the page The Five Sisters surround us What are their names, what have they seen Wonder, war, change, change, change We cross the bridge like sliding along a whale's back An t-Eilean Sgitheanach Where Sgathach trained her warriors The bay of Uig Where Vikings once stood Feels like a portal to another place We weave our way through Loch na Madadh The Bay of Dogs Snapping at our heels We reach Baile Sear The east village now in the west The ruins bring tears to your eyes |
